The school year is winding down and the students in our After School Program deserve some much needed recreational time. In the past couple of months we have gotten to do some special things. Here are a few highlights below.
Partnership with Bigg’s Museum Grows
Check out DEMCO’s Jr. Docents artwork at Bigg’s Museum of American Art in the children’s gallery. Bigg’s Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday at 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. Our Jr. Docents are learning about different types of artwork, and the amount of time and dedication some of it takes to create. Students have been learning art terms and have been making presentations about artwork in Bigg’s permanent collection. We are so proud of our Jr. Docents.
The students in the After School Program have been doing a great job with their homework, participating in reading and math enrichment, and learning about the prevention of substance abuse, bullying, and suicide. As a result of all that hard work they earned some exciting field trips. Some students went to go see the “Jungle Book” on May 27th. They really enjoyed a wonderful evening out, as they saw a beloved story come to life on the big screen. Students also were able to go to Xbos in Smyrna, as well as Chuck E. Cheese. These trips are not only fun but a way to put into practice what we learn at DEMCO, such as respecting ourselves, each other, and our environment.
A group of After School Program students made some delicious cupcakes. Students learned how to measure, follow directions, and practice their cupcake decoration skills. Exploring life skills is a wonderful opportunity to put into practice math skills and reading comprehension, in such a tasty way.
